Soon after Target opened their first store in Hyattsville, they made us aware of grant opportunities that resulted in our department obtaining night surveillance technology. Target next introduced us to the Safe Cities program that served as a catalyst to approach retailers, property owners, and other stakeholders to form public/private partnerships that will have mutual benefit for all who live, work and visit our city. Although still early in the process, we are finding that if you are inclusive in your planning process, examine and build upon similar successful programs, the public and private interests are eager to support their local police department. The technology we hope to soon install as part of a Safe Cities program would not be possible without external financial support and will make our department more effective while at the same time provide an ambiance of personal safety for our residents and guests.
